His suit was dismissed on February 29, 2000. However, Sharadze appealed and won. Jehovah's Witnesses, in turn, appealed to the Supreme Court. On February 22, 2001, the Supreme Court decided against the Witnesses, basically on legal technicalities. The Supreme Court reasoned that the Constitution specifies that religions are to be registered under public law according to an as yet nonexistent law detailing the registration of religious associations. The court concluded that in the absence of this law, Jehovah's Witnesses could not be registered in any alternative form. However, some 15 other associations supporting religious activity are legally registered in Georgia. In reaction to the Supreme Court's decision, Georgia's Justice Minister, Mikheil Saakashvili, said in a television interview: "From a legal standpoint, the decision is very dubious. I don't think it's the most successful page in the history of the Supreme Court." Zurab Adeishvili, the acting chairman of Georgia's parliamentary legal committee, told Keston News Service that he was "very concerned" about the ruling because "it encourages extremist forces in our [Georgian Orthodox] Church to suppress religious minority groups." Sadly, Adeishvili's concerns proved justified. A few days after the ruling, the violence against Jehovah's Witnesses resumed. In the year 2001, Witnesses were assaulted by mobs, police, and Orthodox priests on February 27, March 5, March 6, March 27, April 1, April 7, April 29, April 30, May 7, May 20, June 8, June 17, July 11, August 12, September 28, and September 30. And the list goes on and on. In the midst of this new wave of persecution, the Supreme Court took the unusual step of clarifying its decision publicly, stating: "Unfortunately, the public has wrongly interpreted the annulment by the Supreme Court of the registration of the Union of Jehovah's Witnesses . . . When the court registration of defendants, as a legal entity of private law, was annulled, their right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion was neither directly nor indirectly violated or restricted. Their freedom to change their belief, either alone or jointly with others, either publicly or in private, was not restricted. . . . The Court decision has not restricted the defendants' right to receive and distribute their ideas and information. It did not prohibit their right to have peaceful meetings."

Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall Targeted by Arsonist for a 3rd Time

For the third time in two weeks, a local Jehovah's Witness congregation hall was the target of an arsonist, but this time a passerby was able to get a description of the suspect.

Firefighters were called to the hall located in the 2000-block of Adams Avenue around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday after someone noticed the fence outside the building was cut, and some of the lettering on a wall was damaged.

The passerby waited for the suspect to come outside, and then chased the man, but he was able to escape, authorities said.

The suspect is described as a man standing 5'8" to 6' tall, wearing dark clothing, and a white hood or mask, said San Diego Fire spokesperson Maurice Luque.

Once fire crews entered the building, they found the insides had been doused with gasoline and there were matches nearby, but there was no fire, Luque said.

The suspect was not able to set a fire because there was probably too much gas inside and there was nothing left to burn, according to San Diego Fire's Fred Herrera.

"It appeared because of the prior fires, all of the furnishings had been taken out, so the fire didn't have a chance to develop," Herrera said.

The same building was first attacked two weeks ago on Dec. 20. During that incident, someone broke in and set the drapes and stage on fire using matches. Investigators at the time thought the fire was set to cover up a robbery.

The hall was attacked by a vandal again on Dec. 30. This time the culprit set a back room on fire and painted the numbers "666" on two outside walls.

Police are investigating that incident as a hate crime.

Congregation members tell San Diego 6 News they are "disconcerted" and "baffled" the attacks keep happening. A regional church official says security cameras will be set up in the next few days.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and Crime Stoppers are offering $1,000 for information leading to an arrest, and another $9,000 for information leading to a conviction.

Fire investigators are calling an early morning church fire in University Heights arson.

A Jehovah's Witness congregation hall in the 2000-block of Adams Ave. caught fire around 12 a.m. on Wednesday morning, police said.

Police responded first after a fire alarm inside the building went off, when officers arrived they said smoke was pouring from the building and immediately called for assistance. Officers also noticed when they arrived the front door to the hall was wide open.

When firefighters arrived, they say they found someone had set the stage on fire. MAST investigators said the suspect used matches to set several fires on the stage and drapes.

Congregation members noticed a stereo missing and investigators believe the arsonist may have been trying to cover up the theft.

The fire was small, but the damage from smoke and water will be costly. Firefighters estimate the total damages to be $70,000.

For the first time at the University of Utah's Clinical Neurosciences Center, surgeons have used a novel new cutting tool that is a far cry from the conventional scalpel.

nlike current electro-surgical tools, the paper clip-like tip on the end of the wand is coated with a special alloy that creates a microscopic magnetic field. The tool produces a pure heat that instantly turns on and off at the surgeon's command. No electricity passes through the body. It cauterizes as it cuts and there's no collateral damage.

"The ideal combination is an incision that is a pure searing or sealing of the margin with no bleeding," describes Manwaring, "And yet right beneath that sear is perfectly viable, healthy tissue."

Reduced time in surgery, lower risks for patients, less scarring and faster healing and recovery - the wand easily cuts like a scalpel or with a change of the tip, scoops out tumors or unwanted tissue. It senses automatically how it's being used and even uses flash heating for self-cleaning.

"This is the key goal," Manwaring said. "The surgeon is there to solve a problem and leave the least evidence that he was ever there."

Surgeons like MacDonald say they're optimistic. They like the tool's feel and versatility and its potential for all kinds of applications in the O.R.

In recent years, molecular animations have allowed us -- for the first time -- to peek inside the world of the cell and observe the elegant beauty of its immensely sophisticated information storage, processing and retrieval systems. The more that we learn about the intricate detail of the machinery, the more the design implications become apparent.

I recently came across this stunning animation of the protein synthesis apparatus, showing the ribosome translating the mRNA transcript and the tRNAs carrying each respective amino acid and adding it to the elongating polypeptide. Also shown are the prokaryote elongation factors Tu and G, the former assisting the aminoacyl tRNA's entry into the ribosome and its binding to the A site; the latter catalyzing tRNA and mRNA translocation after each round of polypeptide elongation. The animation also highlights the prokaryote initiation factors IF-1, IF-2 and IF-3. These initiation factors play an important role in the formation of the initiation complex.

As you can see, the machinery involved in protein manufacture is extremely sophisticated and complex. It bears a striking resemblance to engineered technology, only this system operates on a nano scale and far exceeds the brightest accomplishments of human technology.

Pletsch, a former medical illustration student at the Medical College of Georgia, first built a physical ear model and mapped which frequency ranges hit which parts of the inner ear. About 11 million blood transfusions are performed in the U.S. every year and most of those happen during surgery...but now some doctors say getting a blood transfusion could be putting patients' health at risk.

When Linda Lee, 57, of Washington, DC needed to have a non-cancerous tumor removed from her stomach in May of 2011 she was relieved to know that her surgery could be successfully performed in a way that respected her religious belief in not receiving a blood transfusion.

Dr. Evans says that many patients request bloodless procedures. âThis reflects a shift in medicine today. We are more sharply focused on reducing blood loss and eliminating the need for blood transfusions across the board. Itâs simply good medicine since it addresses the concerns about blood borne diseases as well,â Dr. Evans said.

The legacy of the tainted blood scandal where thousands of patients were infected with deadly diseases at British hospitals effectively given death sentences by their own health service. In a moment we'll here the story of two of them from the Yorkshire, Lincolshire region Glenn Wilkinson and Nick Sainsbury.

Well for 25 years campaigners have fought for full a public inquiry and proper compensation for those affected, to no avail. But later this month the subject will be aired in Parliament for the first time, and now they're finally hopeful of a breakthrough.

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Every year thousands of Jehovah's Witnesses flock to Rochester for their yearly conventions.

It's the biggest convention of the year with the strongest economic impact.

They're conventions that bring thousands to the area.

"Bring in about 4,000 to 5,000 people," Visitor and Convention Bureau Executive Director Brad Jones said.

Multiply that by five conventions the Christian Congregation of Jehovah's Witness hosts each Summer.

"Economic impact exceeds $6 million a year," said Jones.

That $6 million is spent at hotels, restaurants, and pretty much anywhere a visitor may go.

"It's great for us and them. We have the space. Everything they're looking for," Jones explained.

Kenard Puchalski, a Rochester resident and member of the group says the city has been their host for 27 years.

"A very easy downtown area for our bothers and sisters to be able to travel to and also come to the assembly site," Puchalski said.

The Jehovah's Witnesses are just one of the civic center's many clients. Every year their client base continues to grow, but because of space limitations workers say they've sometimes had to turn away customers.

"We're seeing the down swing right now as a result of aging facilities also not having dates available when people want them," Brad Jones said.

Since the Mayo Civic Center expansion project wasn't a part of the 2011 bonding bill, the Visitor and Convention Bureau is pushing to make it a part of next year's bill. In turn they're hoping more conventions like this one will bring people to Rochester.

"We feel it's a great project. It would address the needs. Economic impact would be $14 million a year to the city," Jones said.

The Mayo Civic Center is one of three in the state that are looking for expansion money. Other sites include St. Cloud and Mankato.

Vinton Iowa - About 250 volunteers spent Saturday cleaning-up a storm damaged Vinton. Members of local Jehovahâs Witness chapters across Eastern Iowa came to help congregation members damaged on Mondayâs storms.

âStarting Monday morning many people couldnât even get out of their houses. Many people had to go out windows. Once they go out they couldnât even find roads to drive on,â said volunteer coordinator Jason Cox.

Mondayâs storm split or uprooted 75% of trees in Vinton knocking down power lines and damaging homes like this one; the house of a family away on vacation.

âIt would be a mess to come home and find this. So weâre trying to help them so when they come home there wonât be so much to do,â said volunteer Seth Miller.

Much of the city is still recovering.

âIt doesnât even look like the same town anymore. Itâs been truly remarkable,â said Cox.

The Kingdom Hall of Jehovahâs Witnesses of Vinton organized more than 200 volunteers to help the more than 44 families from the congregation damaged by the storm. The volunteers stem from all areas of Iowa, including Seth Miller from Cedar Falls.

âWeâve just been little by little going at it, weâve made really good progress,â said Miller.

And theyâve had to get their hands dirty in the process.

âCutting, hauling to the dump, just trying to keep everything safe here,â said Miller.

Volunteer Coordinator Jason Cox says these Jehovahâs Witnesses are not only helping their own, but other members of the community as well.

âTheyâre out here every day to go to other homes to help and giving up their time and livelihoods for the week, taking vacation time, businesses destroyed and yet theyâre still here,â said Cox.

50 to 100 volunteers with the church have helped clean-up each day since the storm with the largest efforts Saturday. Many of these volunteers have made stops in Vinton to clean-up since Monday. Volunteers with the church also helped in smaller communities like Garrison and Clutier.

"As we work with Marshall Steele to be a destination Joint Center of Superior Performance we began tracking and benchmarking a variety of clinical, operational and financial measures including the incidence of blood transfusions," said Baptist Joint Replacement Center Medical Director and Orthopedic Surgeon Brian Johnson, MD. "There are several reasons to reduce and minimize transfusion rates. These include decrease infection rates, possible disease transmission, allergic reactions, potential for a cross-match error, lung injuries, slight increased morbidity and the costs involved. Bossier City, LA (KSLA)- "Let God's Kingdom Come" is the theme for the Annual District Convention of Jehovah's Witnesses that's being held at CenturyLink Arena in Bossier City.

The convention kicked off at Friday morning with an estimated 7000 people who are attending the three day event. A spokesman for the group says this convention is the latest evidence of the witnesses sharp focus on the Kingdom mentioned in the model prayer recorded in the Bible.

"Many people around the world cite a prayer asking for God's Kingdom to come but they have little idea what they are asking for," said Carlos Boston, spokesman for Jehovah's Witnesses.

Jehovah's Witnesses believe the Kingdom is a real government that will soon take action in favor of those subjecting themselves to it.

Saturday's highlight was the mass Baptism of convention delegates. Special attention was given to the many young people who they say are trying to make a positive impact on society.

"The community will certainly appreciate the value of having young people that are driven by Bible standards that is a big contrast to what we see normally today so the community will benefit as a whole," added Boston.

From May through September, 381 conventions will be held in 98 cities in the United State. The Bossier City Convention will conclude Sunday afternoon.

Thousands of people traveled to Fort Smith this weekend for the annual Jehovahâs Witnesses convention. The three day event kicked off Friday morning.

âWeâre one of the fastest growing religions in the world,â said Herbert Wight, a speaker at the convention.

By the thousands Jehovahâs Witnesses packed the Fort Smith Convention Center Friday. âBring your Bible, bring a pad and pencil, and for three days weâre gonna delve into the Bible,â said Wight.

Organizers expect close to 4,000 people this weekend. Next weekend they will do it all over again, and then the following weekend the program is all in Spanish. âWeâll have 11,000 different folks that will have come to Fort Smith for these conventions,â said Wight.

Participants pack parking lots, restaurants, and local hotels. âReally good business for us,â said Scott Meyer, general manager at the Holiday Inn in downtown Fort Smith, âDefinitely good business for the hotel and for the city.â

Meyer says all 255 of their rooms are booked. He brought on extra staff to handle the crowd. âWe have everybody on standby ready to go,â said Meyer.

Workers at the La Huerta on Garrison Avenue say business picked up Friday night an hour earlier than normal. âWe notice more people, more families, a bunch of kids,â said Hector Torres, manager at La Huerta.

Meyer and Torres both say they do not mind the crowds. âThe whole city is busy, which is great,â said Meyer, âIt drives a lot of money into Fort Smith.â

Jehovahâs Witnesses from Oklahoma, Missouri, and other parts of Arkansas attend the event. âPersonally I hope that weâll continue to be able to bring conventions here,â said Wight, âWe have found Fort Smith to be a warm welcoming place.â

The convention will last through Sunday.

Hi, I am here making a small demonstration of my Bell and Howell Diplomat 16mm Projector, and the movie I am showing is "Divine Will", a silent documentary about the International assembly held by Jehovah's Witnesses in 1958 in the Yankee Stadium and Polo Grounds simoultaneously, in New York. The duration of the assembly was 7 days and the attendance was 253,922. The projector is very easy to use, even for me that is my first time trying out one of these things, I didn't have any troubles on threading the film and understanding how the projector works. This is one of the projectors used by circuit and district overseers (at least in Mexico) during the 60's and this movie was projected to audiences of up to 900 attendees. In the late 70s they came out of use. My intention is to transfer this old films to DVD but I don't have the equipment needed to do that, so if somebody can recommend me a good place here in Monterrey, Mexico to have this job done, I will be very grateful (so grateful that maybe I will share a copy of the resultant DVD :) ). Nearly 40,000 people came to the Tucson Convention Center for the next six weekends starting Friday.

As you can imagine, any event that brings in that many people over the summer is more than welcome.

The Jehovahâs Witnesses fill the TCC arena each weekend, heating up Tucsonâs cooling summer economy.

They come from all over Arizona, and from surrounding states.

For the Jehovahâs Witnesses, the convention is the biggest event of the year.

Gerardo Carrillo, his wife and three children drove down from Chandler for the opening weekend.

âWe make our budget as tight as we can. We save for this special occasion,â he says.

For those in attendance, it's an opportunity to worship and learn more about their religion.

âWe gather basically from all around Arizona . . . some are from outside the state . . . and the focus is always to learn about the Bible, how we can apply it as families and benefit as families, and use it to help others in our community, and to learn how we can serve our God more correctly,â says Jehovahâs Witness Convention spokesman John Freuden.

For the downtown area, and the rest of Tucson, the convention answers a prayer.

âDuring the summer months when tourism is a little slow, to have something like this of this size and this caliber--the impact of it is just--it's incredible,â says Jessica Stephens of the Metropolitan Tucson Convention

2011 District Convention of Jehovah's Witnesses will bring 11,000 delegates to Fort Smith Convention Center.
FORT SMITH, Ark. -- June is going to be a big month for Fort Smith. Delegates with the Jehovah's Witnesses will come from across the region and meet at the Fort Smith Convention Center. Organizers say Fort Smith is the ideal location.
"This is the third year in a row that we've had Fort Smith on our national convention city list," said Herbert Wight, of the Jehovah's Witnesses group. "A number of reasons: One, geographically it's located well for us because most of the delegates are coming from the state of Arkansas. But also because we have in Fort Smith a very nice convention center. But then you have to have a place to house all the delegates, so we have a variety of lodging accommodations."
The local economy should see a boost with the incoming delegates.
"When you bring 11,00 people over three weekends to a city, there's going to be an uptick in sales hotel-motel accommodations. And you know a lot of the delegates are coming from smaller cities, smaller than Fort Smith, so there will be a bit of shopping that will be done," Wight said.
Operators of the Holiday Inn across from the convention center say they're packed.
"We're sold out for the next three nights and the Thursday, Friday, Saturday for the next three weekends. So during the week we have some availability, but on weekends we don't at this time," said Ramona Moon, who is the Holiday Inn's sales manager.
Moon said money spent in Fort Smith by hotel guests makes a big impact.
"They estimate that every guest spends at least $135 a day when they come into the Arkansas area. Everybody benefits when these large groups come in," Moon said.

A similar incident happened on the same day in Bangalore - a city that boasts to be modern and liberal.

This was the coolest experience. I wish our service break spot had a piano man!

So, during the Memorial Campaign we had our CO Visit. During the meeting for field service one morning he was asking us all if we could really think hard, and think of anyone else in the community that we could invite to the Memorial. One of our older brothers (he's 86 and just was baptized about 4 years ago), raised his hand and said that the "piano man" at Jazzy Bagel (a favorite service break spot) is one of his neighbors, and he could invite him to the Memorial. So, our CO asked if he could think of any literature he could place with him. Our brother suggested a Song Book. So for 2 weeks he carried this Song Book around waiting to see him at Jazzy Bagel.

These videos were taken last Saturday, he finally found him at Jazzy Bagel and gave him the Song Book. The piano man immediately started flipping thru it and picked out "He Will Call" and started playing (and improvising). By the time he was on his 2nd song from the book (Life Without End at Last), there was a crowd from 3 different congregations all listening and he received a huge applause (and tons of tips).

He announced that he would always have the Song Book with him on Saturdays in case anyone had any special requests.

We are waiting anxious for any news about our brothers in the latest tornado / storm that hit 05 states in South of USA. The storm death climbs to 193 and 128 in Alabama from a recent public news channel.
The death toll from severe storms that punished five Southern U.S. states jumped to a staggering 193 Thursday after Alabama canvassed its hard-hit counties for a new tally of lives lost.

Alabama's state emergency management agency said it had confirmed 128 deaths, up from at least 61 earlier.

"We expect that toll, unfortunately, to rise," Gov. Robert Bentley told ABC's "Good Morning America."

Mississippi officials reported 32 dead in that state and Tennessee raised its report to 14. Another 11 have been killed in Georgia and eight in Virginia.

The fierce storms Wednesday spawned tornadoes and winds that wiped out homes and businesses, forced a nuclear power plant to use backup generators and prompted the evacuation of a National Weather Service office.

The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., said it received 137 tornado reports around the regions, including 66 in Alabama and 38 in Mississippi.

One of the hardest-hit areas was Tuscaloosa, a city of more than 83,000 and home to the University of Alabama. The city's police and other emergency services were devastated, the mayor said, and at least 15 people were killed and about 100 were in a single hospital.

A massive tornado, caught on video by a news camera on a tower, barreled through the city late Wednesday afternoon, leveling it.

By nightfall, the city was dark. Roads were impassable. Signs were blown down in front of restaurants, businesses were unrecognizable and sirens wailed off and on. Debris littered the streets and sidewalks.

College students in a commercial district near campus used flashlights to check out the damage.

The Kingdom Hall on Victoria's Shelbourne Street is finished. The City of Victoria gave Island Jehovah's Witnesses occupancy permits one week ago.

The building has three separate Kingdom Halls and seven congregations. More than 95,000 volunteer hours went in to the building. The Chair of the Jehovah's Witnesses Regional Building Committee says the mainly volunteer workout helped cut the 6 million dollar project in half. Bill Middleton says the new hall came in on-time and under budget.

1330 people from all over Vancouver Island spent time working on the project.

Everyone is welcome to an Open House May 27th from 10am to 6pm.

Five Jehovah Witnesses have been injured
late Sunday night in a clash with activists of the nationalist VMRO
party.

The incident happened in the Black Sea city of Burgas, in
front of the Jehovah Witnesses Kingdom Hall, where VMRO staged a
protest rally.

The Jehovahs Witnesses are reported as light;
furniture and equipment inside the Kingdom Hall have been damaged
and broken.

10 people are under arrest â all from VMRO,
including the partys regional leader, Georgi Drakaliev, the Burgas
police say. All are going to be questioned.

The protest rally
against the Jehovah Witnesses was scheduled for 7 pm Sunday.

The
VMRO announcement was addressed to the Chernomorets football team
fen club â The Blue Sharks, the Neftohimik football team fen club,
the Union Patriot, and others.

Police are still investigating
who were the exact participants in the brawl and who instigated it.

MOSCOWâFollowing the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which declared the Moscow Golovinsky District Court ban on Jehovahâs Witnesses to be illegal, the Witnesses filed an application with the Golovinsky Court to review its March 26, 2004, ruling. However, on February 15, 2011, the Golovinsky Court dismissed the application to reopen the case, stating that the ECHR judgment âcannot in itself serve as grounds for reversing the court decision . . . or for reconsidering it on the basis of newly discovered circumstances . . .â

On January 11, 2011, Jehovahâs Witnesses in Moscow also applied to the Moscow City Justice Department requesting a reregistration of their legal entity that had been liquidated in 2004. In addition, claims have been filed with both the Butyrsky and Presnensky District Courts in Moscow requesting a review of the rulings by which the religious community was denied reregistration.

The ECHR ruled that a number of gross violations had been committed in the course of these court proceedings and obliged Russia to take measures âto put an end to the violation found by the Court and to redress so far as possible the effects.â Time will tell whether Russia will implement this judgment. Lawyer Arli Chimirov states: âJehovahâs Witnesses are taking all the steps possible. Now it is the governmentâs turn. As a matter of fact, it is the State who is obligated to implement the ECHR ruling.â

PHILADELPHIA - March 21, 2011 (WPVI) -- Bloodless surgery started out as an alternative for some religious groups, but is now becoming more mainstream. The goal is to conserve and make better use of a precious resource - blood.

Jock Davis of Rochester, New York, may not look sick now, but for years, the 48-year-old businessman has been battling a deadly blood cancer called Multiple Myeloma.

Chemotherapy helped, but became less effective. He needed a stem cell transplant, but there was a hitch:

"They do this procedure in my area, but no one does it without transfusions," Davis said.

He's right. Most of the time, stem cell transplants also require whole blood transfusions and as a Jehovah's Witness, that is against Davis' religion.

So he found Dr. Patricia Ford at Pennsylvania Hospital's 'Center for Bloodless Medicine.'

Dr. Ford performs so-called "bloodless" bone marrow transplants.

The Japan quake was the first major test of the nation's $1 billion investment in earthquake early-warning technology. Similar systems could be installed in the Pacific Northwest and California, scientists say. All it takes is money

Imagine being alerted by cellphone that the ground under your feet will start shaking in 30 seconds.

Tokyo residents faced that situation just before their world turned upside down Thursday.

The magnitude-8.9 earthquake that ruptured the seafloor off Japan was the first major test of the nation's $1 billion investment in earthquake early-warning technology.

Similar systems could be installed in the Pacific Northwest and California, scientists say. All it takes is money â and a way to ensure the alerts do more good than harm.

"It has to be a very clear message, and people have to know what to do with the information," said John Vidale, director of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network at the University of Washington.

The rising death toll in Japan underscores the limitations of a warning system. Alerts are most valuable to those in communities distant from the epicenter. For those near Ground Zero, like the Japanese coastal cities flattened by tsunami waves, there's not enough time to sound the alarm.

Warnings would do Seattle little good in the case of a quake on the shallow fault that underlies the city but could benefit Olympia and other cities. But Seattle could have as much as five minutes' warning of a coastal megaquake such as the one that rocked Japan and unleashed a deadly tsunami, Vidale said. Even 15 or 20 seconds can be enough time for people to dive under a table, for train operators to hit the brakes and for factories to shut down production lines, said Tom Jordan, director of the Southern California Earthquake Center.

"In my book," he said, "every second counts."

Along with the U.S. Geological Survey, Jordan and a consortium of colleagues have been fine-tuning and testing a prototype warning system in California for years. Rolling it out statewide would cost $100 million, he said.

The price tag for a system in Washington and Oregon, which face more powerful but less frequent quakes than California, would be about $50 million, Vidale estimates. Maintenance and monitoring would require an additional $6 million a year.

Those costs are small compared with the multibillion-dollar toll of even a modest earthquake. But with the state budget in its current state, Washington is considering cuts to the existing seismic-monitoring program.

In Japan, where earthquake preparedness is woven into the fabric of life, the government spares little expense to protect its citizenry. "For every 10 seismic stations we buy [in the United States], they buy a thousand," Cal Tech geophysicist Egill Hauksson said.

Japan's warning system is the most advanced in the world. A dense network of seismic instruments detect initial tremors generated by an earthquake. These so-called p-waves race through the earth but cause little damage. The warning is sounded in the interval before more destructive, but slower-moving, tremors called s-waves arrive.

As the frantic search for survivors continues in Japan, it's too early to quantify benefits from the alert system. But the technology itself performed well, and the messages undoubtedly saved many lives, Jordan said.

The branch office of Jehovah's Witnesses in Brooklyn NY will release a news about our brothers soon, as we known the Witnesses in cooperation with local authorities and other relief agencies are organized to help meet the immediate needs of their fellow worshippers and other victims in Japan and care for them.

According to the 2011 Yearbook of Jehovah's Witnesses, Japan attendance at the 2010 celebration of the Memorial was 322,875. The worldwide attendance at the 2010 celebration of the Memorial was 18,706,895, an increase of more than half a million over the previous year. The number of people who attend Jehovah's Witnesses' annual commemoration of the Memorial of Christ's death (also known as the Lord's Evening Meal) includes active Witnesses and their children as well as others who are invited to attend.

Witnesses around the world are offering their assistance to Japanese people. The Witnesses' relief efforts are currently being coordinated from their world headquarters in Brooklyn, providing practical help and spiritual comfort for the victims.

Instead of doing research or accepting a Bible study with them, they would rather listen to other peoples ideas and thereby jump to conclusions without getting their facts straight. MorÂ´deÂˇcai and Esther are the most important Israelites in the kingdom of Persia. Esther become the queen, and her cousin MorÂ´deÂˇcai the second only to the king in power. Letâs see how this came about. - Esther and Mordecai 01/10 Do you see this proud man that people are bowing down to? This is HaÂ´man. He is a very important man in Persia. HaÂ´man wants MorÂ´deÂˇcai, whom you can see sitting here, to bow down to him also. But MorÂ´deÂˇcai wonât do it. He doesnât think it is right to bow down to such a bad man. This makes HaÂ´man very angry. And so this is what he does.

But Queen VashÂ´ti kept refusing to come at the kingâs word that was [conveyed] by means of the court officials. At this the king grew highly indignant and his very rage flared up within him. And the king proceeded to say to the wise men having knowledge of the times (for in this way the kingâs matter [came] before all those versed in law and legal cases, and those closest to him were CarÂˇsheÂ´na, SheÂ´thar, AdÂˇmaÂ´tha, TarÂ´shish, MeÂ´res, MarÂˇseÂ´na, [and] MeÂˇmuÂ´can, seven princes of Persia and MeÂ´diÂˇa, having access to the king, [and] who were sitting first in the kingdom): âAccording to law what is to be done with Queen VashÂ´ti because she has not performed the saying of King AÂˇhasÂˇuÂˇeÂ´rus by means of the court officials?â To this MeÂˇmuÂ´can said before the king and the princes: âIt is not against the king alone that VashÂ´ti the queen has done wrong, but against all the princes and against all the peoples that are in all the jurisdictional districts of King AÂˇhasÂˇuÂˇeÂ´rus. For the affair of the queen will go out to all the wives so that they will despise their owners in their own eyes, when they say, âKing AÂˇhasÂˇuÂˇeÂ´rus himself said to bring in VashÂ´ti the queen before him, and she did not come in.â 18 And this day the princesses of Persia and MeÂ´diÂˇa, who have heard the affair of the queen, will talk to all the princes of the king, and there will be plenty of contempt and indignation. If to the king it does seem good, let a royal word go out from his person, and let it be written among the laws of Persia and MeÂ´diÂˇa, that it may not pass away, that VashÂ´ti may not come in before King AÂˇhasÂˇuÂˇeÂ´rus; and her royal dignity let the king give to a companion of hers, a woman better than she is. And the decree of the king that he will make must be heard in all his realm (for it is vast), and all the wives themselves will give honor to their owners, the great as well as the small.â Add to Friends

Well, one day the kingâs wife VashÂ´ti does not obey him, so the king chooses a new wife to be his queen. Do you know the woman he chooses? Yes, beautiful young Esther.

When MorÂ´deÂˇcai hears about the law, he is very upset. He sends a message to Esther: âYou must tell the king, and beg him to save us.â

SANTIAGO, Chile â A magnitude-7.1 earthquake shook southern Chile on Sunday, prompting tens of thousands to flee the coast for higher ground amid fears it could generate a tsunami like the one that ravaged the area last year.

There were no reports of deaths or damage, and Vicente Nunez, head of the National Emergency Office, said no tsunami alert was issued.

"There has been no harm to people, no harm to property," Nunez said. "We will continue monitoring."

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii also said a destructive Pacific Ocean-wide tsunami was not expected.

President Sebastian Pinera urged calm in an address to the nation.

"There was an exercise of self-evacuation, which is exactly what we have asked people to do," Pinera said. "Fortunately we do not have to lament accidents or losses of life."

Some cell-phone communications and electrical power were knocked out in the Araucania region where the quake was centered, 370 miles (595 kilometers) south-southwest of the capital, Santiago.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter was about 45 miles (70 kilometers) away from the provincial capital of Temuco, which has a population of about 250,000.

The quake struck at a depth of about 11 miles (17 kilometers), according to the USGS, and there was at least one aftershock of 5.0 magnitude.

The end of the World

No other generation has heard so much talk about the end of the world. Many fear that the world will end in a nuclear holocaust. Others think that pollution may destroy the world. Still others worry that economic chaos will set masses of humanity against one another.

Could this world really end? If it did, what would it mean? Has a world ever ended before?

A World EndsâAnother Replaces It
Yes, a world did end. Consider the world that became very wicked in the days of Noah. The Bible explains: âThe world of that time suffered destruction when it was deluged with water.â The Bible also says: â[God] did not hold back from punishing an ancient world, but kept Noah, a preacher of righteousness, safe with seven others when he brought a deluge upon a world of ungodly people.ââ2 Peter 2:5; 3:6.

Note what the end of that world meant and what it did not mean. It did not mean the end of humankind. Noah and his family survived the global Flood. So did the planet Earth and the beautiful starry heavens. It was âa world of ungodly peopleâ that perished, a wicked system of things.

Eventually, as Noahâs offspring increased, another world developed. That second world, or system of things, has existed down to our day. Its history has been filled with war, crime, and violence. What will happen to this world? Will it survive?

Jehovah's Witness miner dies at New Zealand's Pike River explosion
The Joynsons had shaped a life in New Zealand, centred around the Pike River coal mine and the Jehovah's Witness community, of which they were active members.

After a year in New Zealand, Australian miner William Joynson and his wife Kim had begun packing their belongings, ready to return to Queensland.

The photo albums and other personal items had already been shipped across the Tasman.

After sons Jonathon, 13, and Benjamin, 10, finished the school year, the family planned to leave their modest cottage and move home early in the New Year.

Friends James Ashby and Rodger Griffiths described the man they know as Willy Joynson as a "typical Australian".

"He's big and strong and loud and funny," Mr Ashby said.

"A typical Aussie. He's larger than life."

But last Friday afternoon, everything changed.

Mr Joynson had clocked on for the afternoon shift at Pike River mine, where he works as a leading hand.

At 3.45pm, a massive explosion destroyed a ventilation shaft, scorched trees and sending a plume of black smoke into the sky. Mr Joynson was trapped deep in the mine, along with 28 other miners.

As rescuers last night prepared to send in a surveillance robot and complete the drilling of a 15cm hole into the mine shaft, Kim was at her home. She is deeply distressed and has been unable to eat or sleep, Mr Ashby said. "She's coping," he said, adding that Mr Joynson's brother, sister and brother-in-law had flown to New Zealand yesterday.

"She is just totally focused on her family, on her husband. She believes he is alive in there. She believes he will come home."

Mrs Joynson later released a statement, saying simply: "We fully support and understand what everyone is doing behind the scenes to get our boys out."

Also among the trapped is another Australian, Josh Ufer, 25, whose pregnant girlfriend Rachelle Weaver is waiting in the nearby town of Greymouth.

During the night, rescuers planned to send an army bomb disposal robot equipped with video up to 2.2km into the mine. It was planned to go to the mine's "pit bottom" at the end of an access tunnel, from where several shafts divide out.

A 1900m hole bored into the tunnel yesterday revealed that fresh air is blowing at least that far, meaning it is safe for the battery-powered robot to enter without serious risk of explosion.

Another bore hole is being drilled into a point approximately 250m along the mine shafts. Seismic equipment, lasers and gas-sampling equipment will be lowered in to determine whether noxious methane, carbon monoxide and other gases are burning or swirling in that area.

For the first time yesterday, rescue leader Superintendent Gary Knowles admitted the miners may be dead. "We still remain optimistic. We are still keeping an open mind - but we are preparing for the possible loss of life," he said.
